Toothaches can occur at any time, and when they do, they can cause a lot of pain.

During such emergencies, you need immediate relief as booking an appointment with your dentist can take time.

So, what should you do to get rid of this throbbing pain?

Serious dental issues can lead to painful toothache. While you wait for your dental appointment, there are effective home remedies you can try in the interim. They can be prepared quickly and work as an effective pain reliever for toothaches.

Keep reading to find out how to relieve your toothache pain at home.

Ways to Relieve Toothache Pain Immediately at Home

Here are some simple yet effective home remedies for relieving toothache.

  • Saltwater Rinse

Rinsing your mouth with saltwater can instantly relieve tooth pain. It has many disinfectant properties and helps effectively cleanse the areas your toothbrush cannot reach. This also removes tiny food particles stuck between your teeth.

All you need to do is add a teaspoon of salt to one cup of warm water and mix. Swish it around your mouth for about 30 seconds before spitting it out. Repeat as needed.

  • Cold Compress

If you notice that your face is swollen due to toothache, apply a cold compress.

Take an ice-filled bag and wrap a towel around it. Put it on the swollen part of your face for about 15-20 minutes and repeat after a few hours. The cold helps slow down blood flow to the affected area and reduce nerve activity, thereby numbing the pain.

  • Peppermint Tea Bags

This common kitchen item is an excellent pain reliever for toothaches. Dip a fresh tea bag into a cup of hot water for about two minutes. Remove it from the water and make sure it is only slightly warm when you apply it to the sore area. Many people also keep the tea bag inside the freezer and use it cold for an extra soothing effect.

  • Hydrogen Peroxide Rinse

Harmful mouth bacteria can also cause toothaches. Hydrogen peroxide helps kill bacteria and minimize inflammation.

To make the rinse, dilute the hydrogen peroxide by adding an equal amount of water. Swish it around your mouth for about 30 seconds. Make sure you do not swallow it. Once done, spit it out. You can rinse your mouth with this mixture two or three times a day to reduce tooth pain.

  • Garlic

Garlic is a traditional means of relieving toothache. Its antibacterial properties help kill the harmful bacteria that can cause tooth pain.

Crush one garlic clove and add a little bit of salt. Apply the paste to the affected area and leave it for about 10 minutes. Make sure to use fresh garlic cloves and not garlic powder, as it will not be as effective.

Chewing a garlic clove is also beneficial for reducing tooth pain but not particularly tasty!

While these home remedies are amazing pain relievers for toothaches, they are only a temporary solution. Depending on the severity of the pain, your toothache may come back. So, be sure to book an appointment with your dentist before it gets worse. Also, take good care of your teeth every day; that includes brushing them properly. This can prevent toothaches and other dental problems like enamel hypocalcification or tooth decay. So, start your oral care routine today before it is too late.
